IRS says E-filing up in 2009
Americans are wasting no time trying to get their money back from Uncle Sam. The IRS said Friday that taxpayers are e-filing their returns from home computers in record numbers.
More than 18 million income tax returns were filed from home computers as of March 6, up 20 percent from the 15.3 million filed from home during the same time last year.
Nearly 52 million tax returns have been e-filed, up 6 percent from the 48.7 million filed during the same time last year.
About 91 percent of tax returns resulted in a refund, but that could change since it’s usually at its highest at the start of the filing season because taxpayers expecting refunds usually file earlier than those who have to pay low fee payday loans.
A lot more people are using the IRS’s Web site, with visits rising to 116.7 million, up 28.7 percent from the 90.7 million visits the previous year.
The year-to-year analysis of total returns filed will be an anomaly this year because last year’s results include those returns filed for the economic stimulus payment, according to the IRS.
As the year progresses, the IRS said it expects to receive and process more individual income tax returns during 2009 than in 2007 but fewer than in 2008.
